Tesla Powerwall 2

Tesla Powerwall 2 is one of the most advanced residential energy storage systems in the world.

Tesla Powerwall 2 is one of the most advanced residential energy storage systems in the world.

What are the benefits?

A Powerwall is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery stationary energy storage product manufactured by Tesla, Inc. intended for residential energy storage. In other words, Powerwall is a battery that can store and supply electricity. For time-of-use customers, electricity prices vary throughout the day. A Powerwall can store electricity during nights (when the electricity is cheaper) and supply that during more expensive peak times. It also has the ability to supply stored electricity during power outages, and can be paired with Solar PV systems. Instead of sending the excess solar electricity generated to the grid, customers can store it in the Powerwall for later use.

Some key features:

13.5kWh usable capacity and 100% depth of discharge

AC coupled battery with integrated inverter/charger

5kW continuous power output with 7kW peak output rating

A unique liquid cooling system

For project SPEEDIER, 10 Powerwalls have been installed in different locations within the town of Parry Sound. The technical specification of Powerwall 2 is provided below.

With the capacity of 13.5kWh, they accumulate to 135kWh. For comparison purposes the average Ontario household uses about 9,500 kWh of electricity per year. Which will be about roughly 26 kWh of energy per household per day.

Let’s assume that for each household, half the daily electricity consumption occurs during peak hours(13kwH). Knowing the Powerwall capacity(13.5kWh), with responsible management, the peak electricity needs can be supplied by the Powerwall, which was charged prior to peak hours.

Currently, the peak electricity cost is 21 c/kWh, which would be supplied by the Powerwall which was charged at 10.5 c/kWh offpeak cost, meaning the customer saves 10.5 c/kWh. This is a little over a dollar a day savings, but in a year, the customer has saved almost $500.
